Science, Art, and an Aerosol Can by celeste

Although i dont expect to be seeing any spray-on clothing on the streets of St Andrews, i would be honored to highlight this interesting new fashion/design medium, because, well, its kind of awesome! Continue reading

I just thought i’d share this band because, to be honest, i’ve never heard anything like it. Caravan palace is essentially an electro French swing band that combines a variety of instrumental and vocal techniques with electronic ones. The final product sounds like a psychedelic circus…but in a good way! Continue reading

Today saw the successful opening of the new Fish Deli and Restaurant on Market street. I had their fish and chips take out and it was really good – better than the other places in town and it may even be a challenge to the place in Anstruther! I didn’t manage to get any snaps, but be sure to check it out! It has a take out at the front, a deli where you can get some pretty good-looking lobster and other fresh fish, and a sit down restaurant at the back. Let us know what you think…

The headache from Saturday evening has finally subsided and the memories have slowly started to piece themselves back together of what was an amazing night! Hosted at Kinkell the KK get no points for originality, but this year’s ball was definitely a blast! This year I opted for a dinner ticket, which at first seemed ridiculously over priced, but on the night was worth it. Arriving early to a champagne reception and queue-less rides with only a hundred or so other guests was a massive perk, however standing around in the cold for a very long time before we were seated wasn’t so great! Once we got seated, warmed up and sufficiently fed and watered the atmosphere in the marquee was rowdy but with a St Andrews twist! And dare I say it…lots of banter!

Later on the rest of the guests arrived and the venue filled up with people enjoying their drinks tokens and the fairground rides letting loose before exams and celebrating the end of the year in style. The drinks system went down a treat and people seemed to be having lots of fun despite “The One Under” bar running out of cocktails mid-way. The music in the VIP tent was kicked off by our very own Dan Matthews, followed by some home-grown talent; Bring back the Planes. In the main arena I noticed a rather cocky indie band with the cliché hair and silly lyrics, but they served their purpose, warming up the room to make space for some more St Andrews showcasing – John Galvin. He threw down some crowd pleasing tunes accompanied by a Jazz band similar to that seen at the Bongo Ball and Masquerade.

Aside from this everyone looked great, guys donning tuxes and kilts and girls looking beautiful in all sorts of styles and summer colours. This was all let down a little however when at the end there was no sign of the traditional survivors breakfast and even worse no busses to get us out of Kinkell at four in the morning – but the KK kept us accommodated in the VIP tent and eventually everyone got home…I think…

All in all a great night, worth every penny for a good cause!

Pimmmmms by Sam

Sorry for the lateness of the post but it’s only now I have started to recover from Pimm’s. The lovely ladies of the Lumsden Club, in addition to making my liver hurt, threw one of the best parties of the year. As Dan and I agree, it was neither the music nor was it the potency of the drinks, but rather the wonderful atmosphere of the whole evening. When I think of Pimms I am reminded of warm summer days laying in the grass having picnics and the Lumsden Club selected a perfect location to host the event. It was a shame the event didn’t start earlier in the day, as I would have loved to play some badminton. The late start of the event, while typical, was my biggest complaint. If it would have started at 2 P.M we all could have enjoyed the weather more and spent more time outside of the marquis. The attitude of the crowd was ecstatic the whole night. Maybe it was the Pimms, but everyone was enjoying themselves and really letting loose.

I enjoyed most of the music choices for the night. I loved hearing reggae while the sun was still up. The band which played next dissapointed me at first by playing some pretty depressing songs, but later they redemmed themselves with some great acoustic mash-ups. The DJ’s at the end couldn’t beatmatch and didn’t impress us at all. But all in all the music was great and we danced our asses off all night.

Maybe next year more tables for flip cup will be provided…..

Britto Bentley by Indie

So the sun is shining, and I’m in the library supposedly writing an essay – naturally that leads to procrastination. But this time I discovered something pretty cool. A Brazilian artist named Romero Britto, famous for his colourful crayola inspired art work, usually its a bit too crazy for me – multi-coloured kittens or giant flower power apples really aren’t my thing when it comes to art. But when I read that he likes to express his artistic madness onto cars, I was pretty intrigued to find out that one of his latest projects was to inject some acrylic madness onto a Bentley GT Continental. The contrast between this classically cool car and its  bold blue and flowery body work look pretty awesome, and he is currently displaying it in a Berlin Gallery before he puts it up for a charity auction later this year — I wonder if they will let you take it for a test drive!?

Masquerade by Indie

The idea of hiding behind a mask and acting socially unacceptable is something I think has crossed all of our minds at some point, partying hard, and even enjoying some inconspicuous fun all in the name of Charity… Our opportunity has come – St Andrew’s very own Masquerade is taking place after the easter break. In preparation I’ve been looking out for a mask for quite some time, but looking around town is pretty much useless unless you are feeling adventurous enough to make your own! Instead I have been trawling the internet (perfect time-wasting whilst planning an essay) and my first thoughts seemed to hint at the idea that all the masks where pretty girly. But then trusty Wikipedia told me about the history of Masquerade balls and the idea of flamboyance and decadence behind them – so it seems that guys can go all out too! Looking at a few it seems classic and black are a sensible option, or for the more daring something pointed and extravagant, don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd…after all you’ll be hiding behind your mask!

Get excited.

Oktoberfest. by Indie

This was one of the coolest events I’ve been to in St Andrews – judging on what my friends told me from last year, I had high expectations! It was Kinkell like I’ve never seen before – black tie and fashion statements were replaced with Lederhosen and traditional German outfits. With beautiful weather on our side it felt like summer had come early bringing with it nearly 5,000 steins of Paulaner beer! The venue was transformed to accommodate 1,200 guests for over eight hours of madness!

Aside from the usual mud coated shoes the only identifiable problem at Oktoberfest were the chaotic queues! This really put a downer on the whole thing and took away from the otherwise amazing atmosphere. But once you got your beer, which was worth the wait I can assure you, we were left to be entertained by an awesome Bavarian band who put a German spin on some all time classics – and even if you didn’t understand what they were saying the amount of beer consumed released your inner German!

This was definitely one of the most fun events of the year and all in the name of charity – it’s just a shame that the rest of the team couldn’t make it…but I look forward to round two next year!
