Fly Away With Me by celeste

Since the Christmas holidays are hastily approaching and a bunch of us will be (weather permitting) flying around the globe to get back home, I thought I would share two of my favorite aeroplane songs in order to usher in the holiday spirit, and to will away the snow from Edinburgh Airport! Primarily Angus and Julia Stone’s song Paper Aeroplane is just fantastic, I cannot stop listening to Continue reading

To be jolly…Oh yes, the lights are up, the tree is trimmed and decorated, Christmas is upon us. This time of year, aside from the presents and mistletoe, is the one time we can all indulge in some fine food and a good deal of alcohol…ok, that is a bit of a lie, we are in St Andrews – we do it all the time. Aside from this im sure you have all be invited to a Christmas dinner party or two…Being such a bunch of foodies (and alcoholics!) I thought it would be nice to see what’s on offer at the dinner tables.

Aside from the traditional minced pies and mulled wine, I indulged in an almost unnatural amount of Goat’s Cheese and tomato chutney last night, alongside some beautiful pecan pies and gooey chocolate cookies. All washed down with some khalua, vodka and milk, to make a nice homemade twist on a White Russian…If you yourself are having a dinner party or a few festive drinks, here are a few suggestions of what to put on your table: how about a cheese selection from Milliners, or a traditional turkey from Butler & Co, and although I don’t usually like to use the ‘T’ word, you can make to most of Tesco’s alcohol offers, and pick up some nibbles on the way!

Leave us with a few suggestions…or maybe leave us with a recipe or two…

Finding the perfect Present… by Indie

Being dragged around town yesterday by two girls looking for dresses was not my ideal Tuesday afternoon. However, with only 23 days to go it did open my eyes to some potential Christmas presents. Although there seems to be a severe lack of shops in St Andrews, there is certainly a lot to buy without breaking the bank.

For the girls, why not try splashing out on some one-off jewelry in Melagrano (South Street) or indulging in some elegant Duchamp socks for the guys. Head over Johnston’s (Pilmour Links) and find something snug for him and her, you might even find something for yourself ! Alternatively head over to Bell Street for some reasonably priced sparkle and smellies in La Boutique, and pick up a nice bottle of Vintage Red from the Little Italian Shop to take along to a pre-Christmas dinner party. Good luck finding your gifts, and why not leave us with a few suggestions on where to find the perfect present in St Andrews this Christmas…

St. Andrews day is upon us and that means only one thing for me: ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ is upon us yet again! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Quanza or any other holiday that comes around this time of year, December is a time of warmth, family, love… and presents! There is one item on my list I thought you all might appreciate! I stumbled across these shoes when I was reading Susie Bubble’s Style Bubble, and I came across these fabulous Bruno Frisoni platform sandals Susie found for the equivalent of 58 GBP, what a steal! So Santa, if your reading, these shoes are definitely on the list.

Deals in the Bubble and…..Christmas by Lucy

You know that when the middle-aged woman in the queue at Tesco’s, who had moments before been perfectly calm, shoves past you with a manic glint in her eye, that she has suddenly had THE revelation. No, not that Tesco’s is painfully bulging with idle students blocking the aisles in their quest for more vodka. But that, My God! Only 5 weeks to go until Christmas!

And because we all despise Tesco’s too, it seems a shame to waste our time there hunting for out-of-stock stuffing with the culinary delights of the festive season approaching. I mean, come on, with all the time saved you could be getting embarrassingly drunk under the mistletoe. Yes, Parties, Dinners and yet more parties are nigh upon us.  These are bound to involve some tempting treats, from festive nibbles all the way to whopping great big turkeys.

But if you are hosting these Christmas get togethers this season, it needn’t have to prove expensive. St Andrews is home to some of the most delightful and scrumptious delicatessens and local producers, that are offering Christmas deals so that your waistline can expand, but your overdraft need not!

If it is just finger food that you need to prepare, or you just want to buy ready made treats look no further than Butler and Company.  For mince pies, a jar of luxury mincemeat stands at just £2.75.  Similarly, a large 625g jar of Christmas chutney stands at just £5.95. Canapes are also available for purchase, and remember, as an esteemed member of the fine food and dining society you are entitled to 10% off all these goods.

For that all-important Christmas pudding, Butlers also offers this delectable festive sweet for just £7.95. Or for an even more mouth-watering experience they are selling hampers from just £15. In one of these you can expect pates, chestnuts, chocolates, and even panettone for the more Italian version of our seasonal favourite.  Not a bad pressie for the folks either!

No Christmas dinner would be complete without a turkey. Here Bridges Butchers can do you some fine deals. For a free range whole turkey the price stands at just £6.25 per kilo. And of course, chipolata sausages wrapped in bacon are a must at Christmas. At just over a pound for 100g of Ayrshire dry cured bacon, and only £8 for a whole kilo of chipolata sausages St Andrews resident butchers makes Christmas a lot more affordable. But if your purse strings tighten at even these conservative prices, fear not. With your fine food and dining society membership card you will receive a further 15% off everything.

With the meat sorted, vegetables can now take prime position on your Christmas shopping list. And love ‘em or hate ‘em sprouts are a traditional must. At the fruit and veg shop fresh sprouts can be bought for only £1.30 per/kilo, followed closely in value by the Christmas stalwart, the parsnip, at just £1.60 per/kg. Fully stocked with cranberries and maris piper potatoes too, this should be the only stop for you if you are seeking fresh and reasonably priced produce.

To complete this merry tour of St Andrews it seems fitting to end at my personal favourite, a cake shop. If you are going to indulge you may as well do it properly. Bearing this in mind, Fisher and Donaldson’s scrummy Christmas yule log is only £8.72. Not full? Try their gingerbread santa biscuits at £3.12…for 20!

No one is denying, my dear foodies, that you can probably go to Tescos or Morrisons and pick up some of these goods for similar prices. But when, fresh, locally sourced, and high quality products are standing right on our doorstep it seems pure madness to endure torture at Tesco’s. As much as I’m sure you all love to make forced conversation in the queue with “that person you don’t wanna speak to ,‘cos you were sh**faced, and got with them the other night”, alternatives, and bloody good ones at that, do exist.

So go out there and explore St Andrews this Christmas, you may not find Santa, but you may save yourselves time and money…

Alright, so I don’t know how many of you read the Topshop blog, Inside Out, or follow their hyper-creative team on Twitter, but lately they’ve been giving out a lot of little previews of Kate Moss’ Christmas collection (meant to come out on Thursday). From what I’ve seen so far, the collection looks like it’s going to be a lot of glitsy little pieces with several silky nightwear and oriental lounge wear looks. In a recent interview, Kate Moss said the pajama tops could be worn as layering pieces, or instead of shirts. Here are a few pictures of some of the day wear. I’m excited for the collection and all, but do you really think these pieces match your image of Kate Moss’ style?

Just got sent some shots of the most recent Always Friday party at the London Egg.

These guys know how to throw parties. A few friends and I went to their ’08 Christmas party co-hosted by MixMag with a DJ set from Justice. Admittedly, it was a little packed, but the night was defiantly a once in a lifetime experience. On July 31st they’re hosting Tiesto in the Park so if you’re gonna be in London, you know where you should be.

They also managed to send us over this little piece of candy from their resident DJ Tommi. Check it out
