Rainy Day Diversion by Elise

Wow it sure is disgusting outside. That’s what we get for having a couple days of (cold) sun. You can see for yourself that it’s raining and windy and that there’s this gross kind of fitful snow. Kind of makes you want to wear something structured and dark and mysterious yet responsible looking. Here are my favorite of the Burberry Prorsum F/W looks. They’re not too much of a stretch in terms of St. Andrews “themes” but I like how wearable they are. A girl who wears these clothes would actually go to her lectures, and I bet she’d have smart things to say in her tutorials too.

Revenge Is Louder by Elise

Don’t ask me to explain the title. It’s an inside joke. I just wanted to pass along the information that the coming Dirty Disco (at Catch this Thursday) should be the biggest, loudest Dirty Disco ever. The crew is teaming up with St. Andrews Audio Solutions, so the massive speaker system that is typically in Ma Belles (think BLEEP! nights and St. Andrews Loves Haiti) is being moved across the street and down the hill, along with a huge lights system. They’re going to be opening the aquarium and putting up an extra bar in there too (so you won’t be squashed by some sweaty drunk person while you’re waiting for your drink).

On the decks will be Tom Lockyer and Alex Brooks along with a warm up set by Chris McCormick. Tickets look set to be £3 and are only available on the door, so I’m going early. Here’s the event.

Bloggers Continue to Take Over the Fashion World by Sara

Earlier this year Colin McDowell wrote an article titled Fashion Blogging: The Rape of the Innocents, about the Fashion Industry doing to these young fashion enthusiasts what the Movie Industry did to young stars of the 30’s. Personally I feel a little weird critiquing young fashion bloggers, because, well that is exactly what I am doing right now, but the article has some really interesting and good points about the whole era of the ‘fashion blogger’. I mean WWD just announced that bloggers will be able to nominate and vote in this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards, talk about praise and power. Well I guess the question here is, will fashion bloggers become just a phase – left in the dust by the rest of the fashion world, or will they make their mark permanent? Only time will tell (sorry I couldn’t resist the cheesy last line)!

Catwalk by Indie

Let’s start off by pointing out that with the budget the staff had to work with they did a great job. The night was certainly enjoyable. Venue 1 looked pretty good, and there was an unusually enthusiastic turn out, so much so that the team got yelled at for selling a few extra tickets (as if that’s really something to complain about) and for buying tablecloths (necessary). There was table service for some, which was taken advantage of by the seated guests who kept the atmosphere rowdy.  There was a delayed start due to some staff cancellations, but some nice pumping electro (Matt Gavris) created an unremitting suspense, giving hope that the show was going to be an improvement on last year. As previously stated, 100 % for effort all around. The models tried their hardest, but except for a couple, ceased to amaze. Same can be said about the clothes which included collections shown at last year’s Don’t Walk and old ideas from local store Shmooz. However there were some up to date designs for menswear including classics from HiDee Jeans, and a few womenswear outfits that were lively and interesting, showing that the team sourced some of their products well. Shows aren’t easy to just throw together, and when organizing a charity event that takes retail donations, it’s always difficult to reconcile the clothes you are able to source with the mood you are trying to project. There was some awkwardness, but over all, everything was fun. And I’m pretty sure fun (and charity) was what they were going for.

Hair was fantastic and voluminous Bridget Bardot 1950’s stuff by Charlie Taylor and make up was done by Laura Brookes, glittery sheer. Gallery of the event below, and of the photo shoot right here.

I’ve noted before how here in St Andrews we are all pretty much glued to our phones – Blackberry’s in particular, as ingenious as they are, delivering our emails and notifications, and being all round brilliant there is room for doubt here. Amazon have come up with a new platform that enables Blackberry smartphone users to get access to over 400,000 books in an instant. Claiming to give you “the best reading experience” on your Blackberry device it will enable you to catch up on some reading whilst on the move without having to carry your books…Im all for apps on my phone but who on earth will be reading an entire novel or doing some tutorial reading on a screen that is smaller than a credit card? Assuming that literature was composed to be read on a tiny screen is pretty insulting really!Come on Blackberry step up your game!

Gucci Group Carrying on the Alexander McQueen Brand by Sara

Last week the Gucci Group announced they will keep the Alexander McQueen label going. Although some have argued that the McQueen’s show at AW Paris Fashion Week should be a memorial service commemorating the years of innovation McQueen gave the fashion world, Gucci has decided they will show his intended AW10 collection. I don’t know about that decision though, it all seems a little to rushed.

Well it’s Monday, Spring is right around the corner, and the sun was shining for once today. In celebration of this and to start the week out right, I’ve got one of my favorite new songs for all of you from Breakbot’s much awaited EP on Ed Banger Records. It is called “Baby I’m Yours” and it’s from the first EP I was turned onto this song a couple of weeks ago and I’m sure my flatmates are getting tired of me singing it. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

Meggings?! by Indie

I hope you are displaying as much shock at this idea as I am – man leggings!New York based designer Victor Glemaud as revealed a new range mens lounge wear, apt for indoor and outdoor use that he calls knit pants. These slim fitting, widely patterned bottoms are more like long johns than sweat pants, but i think they resemble the huge trend adopted by girls all over St Andrews, and indeed the world of wearing leggings. Glemaud says that they are perfect for a nice winters day – starting this post I was pretty shocked, but the more I look at them, the more convinced I am that they will become more acceptable…they do look comfy…But no.No to meggings! What do you think?

Perspiring to look good… by Indie

Aside from revealing Megan Fox as their latest model, this wasn’t the only eye-catching thing seen from Armani this season. Opening their runway show this year in Milan, Armani have teamed up with Reebok to create a pair of sneakers for the more fashion savvy amongst us to kick-start us into the summer. Train in style with what seems from the front a rather simple dress shoe combined with Reebok’s performance technology to create a pair perfect shoes to work up a sweat in without breaking your style! Why would we expect anything less in this town? If these are a little too much check out their amazing take on the classic Converse style high-tops with fretted leather and obvious gold logo in orange, white and grey.

Blast from the Past by Sara

Scrolling through FFFFOUND! yesterday and I came across this old Annie Leibovitz photo-shoot for Vogue 2003. I absolutely love this shoot! I mean of course the wardrobe that model Natalia Vodianova (Alice) shows off is wonderful, but what I enjoy most is how each photo also incorporates the designer(s) who created piece Alice is wearing. Plus, whose excited for the upcoming release of Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton, 2010, UK)  this March?? If you wanna read the story behind it, check out Vogue online!
